PROPERTY FROM THE ALAN AND SIMONE HARTMAN COLLECTION FOUR MIXED-METAL TSUBA (HAND GUARDS) Edo period (1615-1868) and Meiji era (1868-1912), 19th century The first oval, shibuichi migakiji, chiseled and inlaid in gold, silver, copper, and shakudō with Shiba Onkō breaking a water jar to release his friend, signed Ryūryūken Tomonori with an inlaid gold seal (Haynes 10039, active early 19th century); the second, circular, copper, modeled as a monkey using spectacles to examine a monkey netsuke attached to a four-case inrō, signed Kazutomo tō; the third rounded rectangular, shakudō, chiseled in copper, shakudō and gold with the beach at Takasago: on the obverse Jō holding a rake beneath the rising sun, on the reverse an ancient pine tree, with signature Rifūdō Shōzui; the fourth irregular square, iron, chiseled and inlaid in relief copper, brass, gold, and silver with a shōjō (drunken sprite) perched on the back of a minogame (bushy-tailed turtle), the reverse with a vat of sake and a sakazuki (sake cup), the hitsuana plugged with silver and gilt depicting waves and spray, with signature Iwamoto Konkan and a kaō (cursive monogram) 3 1/4in (8.2cm) high, the fourth (4).
