PROPERTY FROM THE ALAN AND SIMONE HARTMAN COLLECTION FOUR MIXED-METAL TSUBA (HAND GUARDS) Edo period (1615-1868) and Meiji era (1868-1912), 18th to late 19th century The first rounded rectangular, sentoku, chiseled and inlaid in high relief of gold, shakudō, and copper with a cockerel and vine, signed Ikkōken Toshiyuki; the second circular, sentoku or brass with mottled patination in Chinese style, chiseled and inlaid in gold, silver, and copper with Benzaiten riding on a dragon and carrying a koto, with signature Issandō Jōi and seal Nagaharu; the third rounded rectangular with a hammered-up edge, sentoku or brass, chiseled and inlaid in copper, gold, and other metals with a performing monkey examining the bells on its jingle, the reverse with a crab emerging from cracked ice, with date Tenpō tsuchinoe sangatsu (third month, 1838) and signature Iwama Naomasa no tsukuru; the fourth oval, shakudō, inlaid in gold, silver, and copper with a mounted samurai and a younger samurai seated on the ground, perhaps Kusunoki Masashige (1294-1336) and his son Masatsura, the reverse with another samurai carrying a banner, birds flying overhead, signed ōmori Hidetatsu (also read Hidetoki; Tokuno Hidetatsu, Haynes 09637, b. 1747) 3 1/2in (8.9cm) high, the first (4).
