PROPERTY FROM A WASHINGTON STATE COUPLE A FINE AND RARE HUANGHUALI RECTANGULAR INCENSE STAND, XIANGJI 17th century The well-figured top composed of a single board set into a mitred, mortise-and-tenon frame with 'water-stopping' and 'ice-plate' edge, the one-piece waist and plain, beaded apron joined to square section thick leges terminating in horse hoof feet tenoned into the base stretchers with integrated short tabs carved at each corner. The small, rectangular incense stand represented by the present lot is occasionally mistaken for a tea stand. While this form likely served as a precursor to the tea stands popular in the Qing dynasty, its primary function was as an incense stand. Unlike the more commonly found circular stands, square and rectangular stands were less frequently produced. See a depiction of a black lacquer incense stand in an anonymous Ming painting, Listening to the Lute 明人聽阮圖 in the National Palace Museum, Taipei (Fig.1). Incense stands held an important function in the lives of wealthy Chinese scholars, found in their homes in a hall or study used as supports for censers holding fragrances of all types to act as a source of inspiration in daily work or artistic creation. They were made in square, rectangular or circular shapes, and could also hold scholar's rocks or flower vases. See a discussion in Handler, Sarah, Austere Luminosity of Classical Chinese Furniture, Berkeley, 20001, pp. 295-302 and in Wang Shixiang, Connoisseurship of Chinese Furniture, Vol I, Hong Kong, 1990, pp. 52-54. For rectangular incense stands in public collections, see one with a marble top in the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Gift of Ruth and Bruce Dayton, (2000.35.1) (Fig.2). See also examples in the Palace Museum, Furniture of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Vol. II, Hong Kong, 2002, nos. 149-163, pp. 167-181. See a rare greenstone-inset Huanghuali square incense stand from the H Collection sold in our London rooms, May 13, 2021, lot 20 and lot 35 Figs. 3 and 4. A similar rectangular stand but with a burlwood top sold at Christie's New York, March 21, 2013, lot 929; another is published in Grace Wu Bruce, Ming Furniture: The Dr. S. Y. Yip Collection, 2015, no. 1, pp. 48-51. Lot Symbols Y For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
