PROPERTY FROM A WASHINGTON STATE COUPLE A HUANGHUALI WAISTED CORNER LEG SIDE TABLE WITH HUMPBACK STRETCHERS, BANZHUO 17th/18th century The single-board floating top set into a mitred, mortise-and-tenon frame with 'ice-plate' edge supported underneath by three transverse stretchers tenoned into the frame and set off by a recessed waist, the beaded apron joined by humpback stretchers and double-locked, mitred, mortise-and tenoned into the square legs which terminate in horse hoof feet. 33 7/8 x 41 1/2 x 16 7/8in (86.2 x 105.4 x 43.8cm) Footnotes 十七/十八世紀 黃花梨有束腰羅鍋棖半桌 Provenance: Grace Wu Bruce Co. See a slightly shorter one with mildly splayed legs in the collection of the Tsinghua University Art Museum. (Fig.2) See also a banzhuo published in Dr. Chu-Pak Lau, Classical Chinese Huanghuali furniture from the Haven Collection, Hong Kong, University Museum and Art Gallery, The University of Hong Kong, 2016, no. 36, pp. 164-167. A closely related example in size and construction but with the humpback apron tenons exposed is published in Grace Wu Bruce, Sublime and Divine. Chinese Ming Furniture, China, 2014, pp. 52-55. Another with carved curvilinear aprons and an inset stone top is illustrated in Grace Wu Bruce, Living with Ming--the Lu Ming Shi Collection, Hong Kong: Grace Wu Bruce Co. A slightly smaller table was sold Sotheby's New York, 21 March 2018, lot 613.
