拍品描述
PROPERTY FROM A WASHINGTON STATE COUPLE A PAIR OF HUANGHUALI RECTANGULAR STOOLS WITH HUMPBACK STRETCHERS, FANGDENG 17th/18th century Each square top composed of a well-figured mitred, mortise-and-tenon frame enclosing a soft mat seat and with an 'ice-plate' edge and a transverse stretcher underneath, the recessed waist and beaded apron carved from one piece of wood and mitred, mortise-and-tenoned and half-lapped to the solid, square, beaded legs joined by humpback stretchers and ending in horse hoof feet. 20 3/4 x 19 1/4 x 18 1/4in each (52.7 x 49.9 x 46.4cm), each (2). Footnotes 十七/十八世紀 黃花梨羅鍋棖馬蹄足方凳成對 Provenance: Grace Wu Bruce Co. Ltd., Hong Kong, 1993 來源: 香港嘉木堂,1993年 Stools were the forerunners of chairs in the evolution of raised seating, emerging during the Northern Song period (960-1126). This pair of stools exemplifies typical Ming design, similar to the one illustrated in Wang Shixiang,Connoisseurship of Chinese Furniture: Ming and Early Qing Dynasties, Chicago: Art Media Resources Ltd., 1990, Vol. II, plate A16, p. 23, from the collection of the Central Academy of Decorative Arts, Beijing 中央工藝美術學院. While surviving stools are typically found in pairs, they were originally produced in sets. Fig.1, an illustration from Chapter 11 of Jin Ping Mei 金瓶梅 (Plum in the Golden Vase), provides a contextual glimpse into the use of a set of stools during a banquet in a wealthy garden. For a set of four similar stools with slightly bulging legs, see the exhibition catalog Splendor of Style: Classical Furniture from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Taipei, National Museum of History, 1999, pp. 66-67, from the Tseng Riddell Collection; and a pair previously in the T. T. Tsui Collection, Hong Kong, included in Shing Yiu Yip and Grace Wu Bruce, Feast by a Wine Table Reclining on a Couch: The Dr. S. Y. Yip Collection of Classic Chinese Furniture III, Hong Kong Art Museum, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2007, pl. 12, pp. 54-55. For related examples in U.S. Museum collections, see Jacobsen, Robert D. with Nicholas Grindley, Classical Chinese Furniture in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minneapolis, The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, 1999, no. 2, pp. 38-39; and another pair in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, accession no. 64-4/10A & B. See a closely related pair sold in our London rooms 13 May 2021, lot 49 from the H Collection. (Fig.2) Lot Symbols W Y For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
