GUARDIAN DEITY OF A VILLAGE WITH COMPANIONS
奥地利
2015年11月14日 开拍 / 2015年11月14日 截止委托
拍品描述
Palm wood and painting. India, Cochin, 19th cent. Ethnologically interesting ensemble, very effective in color design. The guardian god is big and has a powerful head with giant staring eyes. It is twelve-armed and holds the attributes axe (somewhat florally stylized) and trident in the upper hands. Since a feminine breast is shown, this could be a form of Durga, especially beloved in the folk culture, also connected to Shiva. Five defensive Naga (one head on belt) are depicted as well as a five-headed Naga shield over der crown. Compactly colorful ornamental patterns and 8 heads on the base, partly with tongues hanging out. The reverse side is a picture on its own, offering the same goddess seated on a lotus and other divine creatures, such as the amusing painted monkey-headed Hanuman and Garuda with beak and wings. The upper central figure is puzzling: She is youthful, chubby and wears a dark-grey animal. One of the separate companion figures is female with a vessel on her head, the other is dignified with a crown, but no attribute exists. SIZE 49 x 38 CM COMPANION FIGURES 24,5 AND 25 CM From an old Austrian private collection
