拍品描述
Bronze. India, Madhya Pradesh, Bastar, 19th to beginning 20th cent. A magnificent long-legged animal with long, curved, slender trunk in an unusual size for the Bastar. The elephant wears a sun-moon on its der forehead, ornately designed ribbons and decorative fields, as well as zig-zag seams, partly carrying bells. Behind the elephant head, mahavat (elephant driver) sits with vessel and ankusha in the hands. Finally, the tall, pavilion-like attachment (litter) with companion figures, many sun-moon symbols, many bells and inside the goddess Danteshvari on a swing holding a bowl. Danteshvari is not a local deity and is a form of the big Hindu goddess Durga. In the Bastar region, she was the family deity of the royal house and had the priviledge of riding an elephant. Richly ornamented roof of litter with large lotus bud. Patina, rest of cultic red color. HEIGHT 60,7 CM From an old Austrian private collection
