拍品描述
Painting with colors on textile. India, Rajasthan, 19th cent. A very rare richly figurative temple painting with the 23rd Tirthankara of the Jain religion in the center. Parshvanatha is the next to last of the saints, “holy“ resp. spiritual masters of this direction, called Tirthankara. The 24th is Mahavira, who was a contemporary of Buddha. Within a large frame with lotus leaves, upon which 15 animals are pictured, and within further borders with waves are lotus blossoms and once again – partly fantastically composed - animals, then Parshvanatha sitting in meditative pose below a seven-headed naga shield (cobra), with crown and elaborate jewelry. Beyond this, the dominant center of the painting, are four larger standing figures in the corners: They are female, half naked and green. In the upper center, again and small is Parshvanatha inside a palace. The many little figures are quite different in their activities: They ride elephants or are in ox carts, holding flags or ladies sit together chatting and peacocks are strutting around. SIZE APPROX. 126 x 91 CM From an old German private collection
