Jade. China, Han Dynasty, 2nd to 1st cent. BC A little circular disc with two appendages in form of phoenix with arched bodies, swinging crest and strongly curved beak. On both sides of the disc several other animals are depicted. Larger are the standing bear and pacing tiger, smaller are the phoenix as well as a snake, formally (particularly the head) very similar to a chilong dragon. Brown-yellow color tone of the jade, which has become whitish outside through ageing in an underground environment. A redyellow color is presented with backlighting. 玉双凤佩 – 西漢, 公元前2世紀-前1世纪宽7,7 厘米 WIDTH 7,7 CM From an Austrian-Hungarian collection Accompanying this jade, is an expertise by Univ. Prof. Dr. Filippo Salviati. Also from him, is the following information about comparative examples from publicized excavations or offered from specialist literature: An ornament similar in size and shape, but with a differently decorated ring, has come to light in 1973 from tomb no. 40 of a late Western Han cemetery in Ding County, Hebei Province. A rectangular jade plaque of the Han period in the collection of the Tianjin Museum is decorated with a snake, bear and tiger very similar in style to those carved on this ornament (Yang Boda, Zhongguo meishu quanji: yuqi (Chinese works of art series: jade) vol.9, Beijing 1986, nos. 189 and 194, respectively).
