DECORATIVE JADE WITH TIGER AND PHOENIX
奥地利
2015年11月14日 开拍 / 2015年11月14日 截止委托
拍品描述
Jade. China, Han Dynasty, 2nd to 1st cent. BC A very finely crafted jade featuring the interesting contrast between decorative embellishment and energetic depiction of the tiger hu. The cat of prey is captured here in a fanciful framework, the body coiling itself with forceful energy, the jaws biting the frame. The phoenix at the upper border is little and more an element of the decor. Light reddish color of the jade as result of iron content and surface grown whitish through the ageing process. Altogether very good preservation and astonishing quality. 玉镂雕虎凤纹饰 西汉, 公元前2世纪-前1世纪 长7,6 厘米; 高 5,2 厘米 HEIGHT UP TO 5,2 CM, WIDTH 7,6 CM From an Austrian-Hungarian collection Accompanying this jade, is an expertise by Univ. Prof. Dr. Filippo Salviati. Also from him, is the following information about comparative examples from publicized excavations or offered from specialist literature: Stylistically, this ornament can be related to the jades unearthed from the tomb of the King of Nanyue, in Guangzhou, which are characterized by an extensive use of the openwork technique, and a combination of different animals carved in dramatic and dynamic postures: see some examples reproduced in Yang Boda, Zhongguo meishu quanji: yuqi (Chinese works of art series: jade) vol.9, Beijing 1986, nos. 156 to 159. A pair of comparable ornamental plaques in the Harvard Art Museum collections (acc. nos. 1943.50.289 and 290) are carved with tigers in a similar position but coupled with wing-like shields: see the online image at: http://www.harvardartmuseums.org/collections/object/204769?position=0.
