Cf. a woodcut with the same subject in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum in New York (acc. no. 30.1478.107).

This print is also with the ‘Rain at Ohashi’ and ‘Foxfires at Oji’ one of the three most popular scenes from the series. A particular appeal is created by the powerful depiction of the eagle, which looks for its prey in the wintry marshes below. In the distance the snow-capped mountain Tsukuba can be seen.

The woodcut is in good condition with slight traces of age and wear. Worn edges, minimal yellowed, backed. The print has a dimension of c. 35.5 x 24.3 cm.

UTAGAWA Hiroshige (1797-1858) 歌川広重
Together with Kuniyoshi und Kunisada, UTAGAWA Hiroshige was one of the most influential masters of Japanese color woodblock prints during the late Edo period and is considered the last great master of the ukiyo-e tradition. He created an entirely new composition of the landscape view, which generates a harmonious symbiosis between man and nature. He is also known as ANDO Hiroshige.
