Representing fidelity and punctuality, the cockerel is the tenth in the 12-year cycle of Chinese zodiac signs. It underscores auspicious connotations relating to awakening people and ending darkness. See a related jade carving of a cockerel, Qing dynasty, illustrated in Chinese Jade Animals, Hong Kong, 1996, no.180.

Compare with a related pale green jade carving of a cockerel, early Qing dynasty, which was sold at Sotheby's New York, 19 March 2019, lot 239.
