A pair of Chinese cloisonne round lidded jars dating from the Jiajing or Wanli period of Ming dynasty. The lids each feature a dragon while the bodies depict a pair of mystical beasts. Dimensions are: 3 3/4 inches tall X 5 inches in diameter, 9.53 cm X 12.70 cm, each weighs 754 grams. All measurements are approximate. Condition: Age appropriate wear including numerous chips and areas of damage and loss. A reminder that all lots are sold as-is. We have sought to record the changes in the condition of this piece after its initial manufacture as diligently as possible; however, as stated in our terms, condition reports are statements of opinion and not representations or warranties. Oakridge Auction Gallery bears no responsibility for any error or omission. Provenance: From an estate in Central California. Notes: In the middle and late Ming Dynasty, the court began to favor cloisonne decorative arts. In the Wanli period, the number of cloisonne works with bold glaze color increased significantly. Craftsmen during this period were good at using bright red, blue, white, yellow, and green glazes for pattern decoration, emphasizing the strong contrasts between the colors; however, this contrasting quickly gave way to unique color blends and gradient effects with the introductions of coral glaze and lapis lazuli blue glaze. Both strong contrasts and smoothly blended colors are present on these jars. Notice, for example, the depictions of rocks on both jars; their deep lapis exteriors transition into bright cerulean and then golden yellow enamel colors at their centers, all within the confines of the same wire frames. Or look at the tongues of the beasts on the sides of the jars, which feature a light pink color blended from the red and white base enamels. This clearly demonstrates the attention that the craftsman paid to all the details of the pieces, as no other section of the jars features the same pink color. The lid of the jar depicts a five-clawed dragon in a strong red enamel. It is domineering and powerful with characteristics of the typical Jiajing and Wanli periods. The body of the jar is depicted with a red and yellow qilin and a blue sea horse. The whole body of this work has a filigree ruyi pattern set against a clear white ground. The inside and bottom of the tank are copper, encrusted with the traces of time. It is not easy for jars such as these to retain their vibrancy and charm over so many centuries, let alone doing so while retaining their pair. A similar cloisonne box is currently housed in the Palace Museum in Beijing under accession number 00116147. A pair of large cloisonne dragon jars were previously sold at Christie's New York on March, 15, 2015, as lot 3271. 3271。 High resolution photos can be found here. https://oag.smugmug.com/March-Asian-Works-of-Art-2-2022
