A Chinese teadust water coupe with a 4-character mark of Daoguang and of the period. It comes with a wooden stand. Dimensions are: 2 1/4 inches tall X 3 inches in diameter, 5.7 cm X 7.6 cm. All measurements are approximate. Condition: It is in overall good condition with very minor glaze loss to the rim. A reminder that all lots are sold as-is. We have sought to record the changes in the condition of this piece after its initial manufacture as diligently as possible; however, as stated in our terms, condition reports are statements of opinion and not representations or warranties. Oakridge Auction Gallery bears no responsibility for any error or omission. Provenance: From Ms. Wong in Atlanta, Georgia. The items in the collection were acquired by their mother in Hong Kong from the 1940s to the 1960s. The lot comes with a copy of provenance documentation. Notes: Quite a few poets and scholars of the Qing dynasty have mused on the beauty of teadust glazed porcelains. They praise the popular glaze's depth of color and unique semi-matte finish in particular, emphasizing its affinity to nature through elements like leaves or dirt. This water coupe perfectly fits their descriptions and earns their praises. Its coloring is both humble and grand, a mysterious amalgamation of intense olive greens, dusty yellows, and deep mossy browns. The squat coupe has a round mouth, which almost appears as a shallow depression rather than an opening due to the gradual pattern of dark brown streaks encircling its rim. Conversely, the shape of the coupe's shoulder swells outward before slightly narrowing towards its concave foot. The whole piece resembles a simple apple in shape, but thanks to the natural beauty of the teadust glaze, it does not lack for dignity or artistry. At the bottom of this work is the seal script mark of the emperor Qianlong, covered in a luminous mahogany brown glaze. A masterpiece of its kind, this water coupe certainly lives up to the exalted reputation bestowed upon it by contemporary lovers of art. A similar teadust jar is currently housed in the Palace Museum in Beijing under accession number 00150225. A similar teadust pot was sold by Christie's Hong Kong on November 28, 2011, as lot 2318. A similar teadust jar was sold by China Guardian International Auctions Co., Ltd. on April 27, 2008, as lot 1954. 2318。 High resolution photos can be found here. https://oag.smugmug.com/March-Asian-Works-of-Art-1-2022
