Victor Segalen Collection

Lots 202 to 204

In 40 years, Victor Segalen (1878-1919) lived more than one life, he was a marine doctor, but also a novelist, poet, sinologist and even an archaeologist. At the beginning of the 20th century, he made several expeditions to China before settling there. For the time, the man had a modern view of the Chinese world. He even planned to create a "Sinological Foundation" in Peking, to establish a cultural dialogue likely to improve mutual understanding between France and China. The declaration of the 1914-1918 war, which recalled him to France, and his premature death in 1919 put an end to the realization of this project. Segalen drew deep inspiration from China, which he nurtured through his encounters. On this occasion, he discovered a passion for oriental culture and art, which he collected. A large white porcelain basin with blue enamel decoration from the Jiajing period (16th century), which served as a bathtub for his grandson, is one of the unusual objects in his collection. Its rarity and beauty lie in the specificity of the white blues of this period and particularly in the use of Huiqing blue, literally blue of the Hui minority.
