Property from a private European collection KANAMORI EIICHI (1908-2001) A bronze flower vaseShowa (1926-1989) or Heisei (1989-2019) era, circa 1973-1995With slightly everted sides rising to a three-stepped shoulder and short, slightly everted mouth and resting on a recessed foot, with a consistent dark-brown patination, the recessed base with cast three-character signature EiichiWith a wood tomobako storage box inscribed and signed Chudo hanaike Eiichi (Cast bronze flower vase, Eiichi) and sealed Eiichi 13 1/2in (34.5cm) high 注脚 Born in Takaoka to a family that made food offerings for Buddhist altars, Kanamori Eiichi began his training in the local metal industry school at age 12, while simultaneously studying Nihonga (Japanese-style painting) with Nakajima Shuho. In 1930 he first showed his work and became a member of the avant-garde Mukei ("Formless") group of artists-craftsmen led by Takamura Toyochika, setting up his own business in 1931. After many years exhibiting at the Teiten national salon and its later iterations, in 1957 he switched to the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition. In 1973 he began to write his name with the three characters seen on the present lot. In 1989 he was named a Juyo Mukei Bunkazai Hojisha (Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Asset, or "Living National Treasure"), the first metalworker from Toyama Prefecture to achieve this high honor (see www.tobunken.go.jp/materials/bukko/28240.html).
