A George II sterling silver oil and vinegar cruet, London 1753 by Samuel Wood (first reg. 3rd July 1733) The stand of twin circular form with galleried sides and twin C scroll sides raised upon shell feet. An acanthus capped double C scroll handle opposite a cast and applied rococo asymmetrical rocaille cartouche engraved with a quartered coat of arms charged with a cadency mark for a second son. Fitted with two diamond-cut clear glass cylindrical bottles mounted with chased hinged lids with D section handles. Fully marked underneath stand, the bottle mounts unmarked. Length – 17 cm / 6.6 inches Weight – 493 grams / 15.85 ozt Samuel Wood (1703/04 – 1790) was the most prolific caster maker of the 18th century, he was apprenticed to Thomas Bamford on the 7th June 1721. He was a Warden of Goldsmiths Hall 1758-60 and the prime warden in 1763. The continuous line of 18th century master and apprentice in caster making is found with Charles Adam training Thomas Bamford, Bamford training Wood and then Wood training Jabez Daniell, and finally Daniell training James Mince. The arms are for a second son, possibly: of Brouncker, quartering Whitfield quartering Wolsey quartering Brouncker, however this is open to further heraldic research.
