拍品描述
Of inverted baluster form upon a domed circular foot. The body with wrythen fluting with embossed decoration of flower bouquets centred with an oval scroll and rocaille cartouche, engraved with a quartered coat of arms charged with the red hand of ulster on an escutcheon. The domed pull off lid with a corded edge surmounted by an artichoke finial, wrythen fluting with embossed floral decoration, later drill pierced to act as a caster. Fully marked underneath, the lid marked with makers mark and lion passant only to bezel. Height – 13.5 cm / 5.4inches Weight – 279 grams / 8.97 ozt The arms are for Heathcote quartering Rayner with an escutcheon for a Baronet. For either Sir Gilbert Heathcote, 3rd Baronet (c.1723-1785) of Normanton Park, Rutland or possibly his brother John Heathcote (c.1727-1795) of Conington Castle, co. Huntingdon Both were sons of Sir John Heathcote, 2nd Baronet (1689 – 1759) eldest surviving son of Sir Gilbert Heathcote, 1st Baronet (1652-1733), Lord Mayor of London, and his wife Hester Rayner, daughter of Christopher Rayner. Sir Gilbert succeeded to the baronetcy and to Normanton Park on his father's death in 1759. In 1761, he was elected as Member of Parliament for Shaftesbury, a seat he held until 1768. He married firstly Lady Margaret, daughter of Philip Yorke, 1st Earl of Hardwicke (1690-1764), in 1749. After his first wife's death in 1769, he married secondly Elizabeth, daughter of Robert Hudson, in 1770. For these arms, which are not impaled for marriage, to belong to Sir Gilbert they would have to have been engraved when he was not married between 1769-70. If they are for his brother, who married Lydia Moyer (d.1822) on the 27th October 1764, then they are lacking the cadency mark for a second son. John Heathcote did use these quartered arms, without the baronet’s escutcheon and with the correct cadency mark with the arms of Moyer on an escutcheon of pretence for the large gilt toilet service he commissioned from Parker and Wakelin in 1766. (A pair of baskets sold Christie’s London, 17 Nov 2009, lot 276 £15,000 incl. premium).
