The above depictions belong to the collected work 'Dai Chikamatsu zenshu' - furoku mokuhan - 大近松全集 付録木版 (“Woodblock Supplement to the Complete Work of Chikamatsu“). In this comprehensive, collected series of 18 prints, 18 artists contributed respectively one sheet. Occasion for the subscription-based, published series was the 200th day of death of Chikamatsu Monzaemon (1653 - 1724), greatest dramatists of Japanese theater history. The Japanese Shakespeare wrote more than one hundred pieces, almost all for puppet theater (Bunraku), for the most part adapted for Kabuki theater.
