Fired ceramic. Japan, Bizen, Meiji Period
Exceptional and massive sculpture of a big shishi lion dog in crouched posture with wild hissing expression. The design of the powerful head is rarely spirited, the eyes very deepset with inlaid glass spheres, enhancing the enchanted expression. The very muscular body of shishi is stretched back, the tail flaming up energetically. Further flaming elements, very forceful paws. Minor improvements, altogether well preserved ceramic from Bizen manufacture - ideal as terrace sculpture.
