Wood with lacquer color. Tibet, 17th to 18th cent. Complete, and in original preservation, wood figure of Manjushri, a transcendental bodhisattva, of "gentle beauty", seated in padmasana on a lotus throne and wearing jewelry chains and crown, as well as beside his shoulders the defining attributes flaming sword and sacred scripture, both on lotus blossoms. Manjushri is a guardian patron for scholars and chases away the dark demons of uncertainly with the flaming sword. His hands form the gesture of dharmacakramudra (turning the wheel of teaching); facial features are finely crafted and introverted. Strong patina, Age characteristics, closed beneath with wooden plate and textile, inside certainly filled with votive offerings.
