Silver and gilding. China, presumably Tang to Liao, 7th – 10th cent.
A rare enchased bowl dived into five sections with decorative reserves and with a respectively lobed rim. The decorative reserves are oval and show birds facing each other within a floral border and separated by an ornament in the center. These depictions are most finely engraved and gilt. The diagonal flared foot is attached and bears a decorative strip of gilt leaves in a row along the bottom edge. Marks of age, patina, minor flaws in some areas.
