劉國松 峽谷 設色紙本 立軸 一九六七年作Painted in 1967, this composition typifies the abstract landscapes that Liu Guosong introduced to a North American audience through a series of solo exhibitions in the late 1960's. A 1967 solo exhibition at the Lee Nordness Galleries on East 70th Street in New York City was reviewed by New York Times art critic John Canaday. Describing the artist's approach, Canaday notes " ...a dashing exponent of traditional Chinese landscape painting hybridized with modern abstraction. His apparently broom-sized brush, filled with ink or color, charges around the field of the paper with great vigor; seas, mountains and valleys appear and disappear within the pattern; here and there the paper seems to have been rent by the weights and forces that open up chasms—but it is only collage. And all the while, everything is very elegant."
