拍品描述: Attributed to Masakazu (Nagoya 1839-1891 or 1894)

The Sennin straining beneath the weight of a giant toad, its eyes inlaid in copper coloured material
Unsigned. Circa 1850

The attribution is a confident one. Compare with a signed Masakazu, in which Gama lies on top of a huge toad, in Barker and Smith, Netsuke, the Miniature Sculpture of Japan, British Museum, p. 27, no. 5

Condition: some small hairline cracks

Please note: this lot contains ivory and is therefore subject to the relevant trade restrictions in correspondence with CITES regulations. The import of ivory in to the United States has been banned.
