A JAPANESE TWO-PANEL FOLDING SCREEN"A two-panel folding screen; ink and silver leaf on paper, depicting young bamboo amidst grass and rocks, signed Chokunyu sanjin hitsu hachijuni (Brush of Chokunyu Sanjin at the age of 82), sealed to the right Bosai, and to the left Tachi no in and Kozetsu shi, dated Kigen nisen gohyaku gojugonen (1895)62 3/4 x 64 in. (159 x 162 cm.) (when unfolded)62 3/4 x 32 x 1 1/2 in. (159 x 81 x 3.8 cm.) (when folded)""Tanomura Chokunyu was a pupil and adopted son of Tanomura Chikuden (1775-1835). Born in Bungo Province, modern day Oita Prefecture, Chokunyu was a nanga [lit. southern-style] painter. Regarded as one of the key figures in the establishment of the Kyoto Municipal School of Fine Arts and Crafts, Chokunyu served as their first director before founding the Nihon Nanga Kyokai (Japan Nanga Society) in 1896 with fellow artist, Tomioka Tessai (1837-1924).The inscription has been translated as:I painted whilst a pure breeze was felt beneath the willow trees in bright moonlight. Like a righteous man, the bamboo is upright and impartial. Painted by the brush of Chokunyu Sanjin at the age of 82 at the Five Immortals Studio, on the tenth month of the beautiful moon, Japanese imperial year 2555 (1895)."
