拍品描述: A SWISS ENAMELLED GOLD SNUFF-BOX BY RéMOND, LAMY & CIE, MARKED, GENEVA, 1801-1804 rectangular box with rounded corners, the cover inset with a shaped rectangular enamel plaque finely painted with a view of Alexander the Great with the family of Darius in a temple, the sides and base set with panels of translucent mauve enamel over moire-pattern engine-turning within dark-blue enamel frames, the cover and base bordered with a black and blue taille d'épargne surround inset with opaque white enamel frames and gold foliage, the black enamelled canted corners decorated with plinths draped with swags, the interior cover engraved with the signatures 'Alphonso' and 'Moratalla' and the date '19 3-911' 3 5/8 in. (93 mm.) wide The engraved signatures inside the box are those of Alfonso XIII (1886-1944), King of Spain (1886-1931), and the marquise of Moratalla. In 333 BC Alexander defeated Darius III, the last king of the Achaemenid Empire, at the Battle of Issus. The defeated Persian king Darius escaped capture, but his wife Statira, his mother, Sisgambis, and his daughters Statira and Drypetis were taken prisoner. The enamel tells the story of Alexander’s generosity to his defeated enemies. After the flight of Darius, Alexander visited his wife, mother and the other women of the family and extended them his protection.
