Situated on the western slopes of the Sabine Hills, along the Anienne River, Tivoli's famous waterfalls plunge 354 feet (108m), close to the Villa d'Este, a Renaissance palace begun in 1550 by Pirro Ligorio for Cardinal Ippolito d'Este. The nearby Hadrian's Villa contained the floor mosaic, discovered in 1737, of the Capitoline Doves. Tivoli exercised a magnetic attraction for visitors and artists, as well as tourists on the Grand Tour, through its combination of hill top villas and temples overlooking an expansive countryside together with the wild torrents of the waterfalls of the river Aniene.
