CIRCA 1730-35, BLUE CROSSED SWORDS AND GILDERS 1. TO BOTH PIECES The saucer decorated with the crowned Royal Arms of Denmark, reserved on the chain of the Order of the Elephant, the teabowl painted on one side with the crowned monogram of Christian VI, and a finely painted river landscape scene within a gilt cartouche, the inside with a circular medallion of chrysanthemum heads reserved on a purple trellis, gilt scrollwork borders to the rims
The armorial service to which this teabowl and saucer belonged was a probably a gift from Augustus the Strong, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony, to Christian VI, King of Denmark and Norway. While the circumstances of the gift remain unknown, it should be noted that it is unusual for its large size and its decoration, which combines both chinoiserie decoration and European harbour scenes.
A teabowl and saucer from the service is in the Arnhold Collection, New York 1. and another is in the Carabelli Collection.2. Other examples of teabowls were sold from the Hoffmeister Collection, Bonhams, London, 26 May 2010, lot 70, from the Marouf Collection, Bonhams, London, 2 December 2015, lot 41 and another, anonymous sale, Bonhams, London, 5 July 2018, lot 40.
