A PAIR OF ITALIAN GILTWOOD MARQUISES LATE 18TH CENTURY, ADAPTED Of ample proportions, each with a curved padded back, arms, seat and squab cushion covered in crimson red silk velvet, the beaded supports with pinched foliate finials, the foliate-wrapped arm supports above a conformingly-carved seat, on turned tapering and stop-fluted foliate legs headed by rosette paterae and terminating in gadrooned feet; probably converted from canapes, with associated 'Mecca' decorated backrails 38? in. (97 cm.) high; 33 in. (84 cm.) wide; 32 in. (81.5 cm.) deep
The present marquises, albeit adapted from canapes, were part of a larger suite of seat-furniture, of which, a pair of fauteuils and sofa, was sold from the Collection of Maria Angiolillo, Rome, Christie's, London, 15 July 2010, lot 554. The design for these chairs relate closely to a drawing by the Parisian architect Jean-Charles Delafosse in the collection of the musée des Arts-Décoratifs, Paris (inv. 8440), and demontrate the widespread interest in French furniture designs across Continental Europe during the late 18th century.
