拍品描述: A PAIR OF ITALIAN PIETRA DURA PANELS POSSIBLY GRAND DUCAL WORKSHOPS, FLORENCE, MID-18TH CENTURY Each retangular panel with a blue alabaster, siena marble and lapis lazuli harbour scene with figures, fishing boats, towers and a town beyond, within a spanish brocatelle border 12 ? in. (32.5 cm.) high; 27 ? in. (70 cm.) wide Pietra dura panels depicting landscapes were made at the Galleria dei Lavori, since the early 17th century, and the earliest are perhaps those designed by Bernardino Poccetti circa 1605-1608, which are precious in the use of hardstones but naive in design. Clearly the taste for exquisite panels depicting landscapes remained fashionable well into the 18th century, long after their initial production. In France, sumptuous pietra dura panels were employed to embellish furniture in the late 18th century, a fashion almost certainly promoted by marchand-merciers. The Louis XVI ormolu-mounted ebony table by Martin Carlin (ma?tre in 1766) at Versailles is one of the richest examples of furniture embellished in this manner. Related coastal landscapes sharing the same light blue-grey, slightly transparent sky, which contrasts with the greens, pinks and reds used for the vegetation, buildings and figures, sold Christie’s London, 7 July 2005, lot 425.
