A FLEMISH MYTHOLOGICAL TAPESTRY PROBABLY BRUSSELS, LATE 17TH CENTURY Woven in wools and silks, depicting Venus watching over Adonis from Ovid's Metamorphoses, he accompanied by hounds, she on a cloud surrounded by putti, within a fruited scrolling border with cartouches depicting classical figures centred by a crest depicting three roses and a bird; reduced in height and width, the lower border lacking 97 ? in. (248.5 cm.) high; 104 ? in. (265 cm.) wide
The cartoon design for this tapestry is possibly inspired by an etching dated 1672-77 of a painting by the Dutch 17th century artist, Augustinus Terwesten (1649-1711) depicting Venus watching over Adonis; a copy of which is in the Rijksmuseum (RP-P-OB-19.897). The tapestry probably forms part of a series of seven narrating the story of Venus and Adonis from Ovid's Metamorphoses similar to the French series made in the Gobelins Manufactory for Louis XIV in 1714. The coat of arms on this tapestry is possibly that of the Vandenbempt family.
