A LATE LOUIS XV ORMOLU-MOUNTED ROSEWOOD AND KINGWOOD MARQUETRY TABLE CHIFFONIERE BY ROGER VAN DER CRUSE, DIT LACROIX ('RVLC'), CIRCA 1765-70 The circular grey-veined white marble top with pierced gallery, above a single frieze drawer on cabriole legs joined by a galleried undertier inlaid with a flower spray, on foliate-cast sabots with castors; twice stamped 'R.V.L.C.' 28 in. (71 cm.) high; 15 ? in. (39 cm.) diameter
Roger Vandercruse, dit Lacroix, ma?tre in 1755.
This elegant gueridon is characteristic of Lacroix’s work in the ‘transitional style’ of the late 1760s and early 1770s. Entirely veneered in rosewood with only a central flower spray to its lower tier, the present table is an early example of RVLC’s oeuvre, relating to a group of tables all stamped by Lacroix of similar design and size, but of slightly more advanced neoclassical decoration. In shape, each table has a similar circular or oval galleried top and undertier, upon distinctive double-curved cabriole legs, but inlaid overall with patterned trellis marquetry and mounted with neoclassical mounts. For one such comparable of identical form see P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Fran?ais du XVIIIe Siècle, Paris, 1989, p. 752, fig. B.
