Hanging Scroll Depicting the Consort Chen, China, 19th century, standing with a covered bowl in her right hand, entitled and inscribed with a brief biography of her, signed "Nanshe Gongtingjue" with two seals, ink and color on paper, 41 3/4 x 11 1/4 in. Provenance: Descended in the family of Dr. Marshall Hertig, an internationally noted medical entomologist who conducted research on disease bearing insects at the Peking Union Medical College, from 1923-1928, his wife Edwina Smiley Hertig, and their son Bruce Allerton Hertig to the present owner. Estimate $800-1,000 remounted on paper, now also severly toned with multiple tears and creases, spotty foxing on reverse, traces of old retouches to painting.
