A hanging scroll, depicting the death of Buddha and his entering Nirvana (nehan). At the centre the historical Buddha Shakyamuni lies on a dais, his head resting on his right arm. He is surrounded by mourning, weeping and grieving luohan, deities, demons and heavenly guardians. Only the enlightened Bodhisattvas with a golden body colour remain serene. Eight sala-trees encircle the death bed and clouds move through their leafy crowns topped by a full moon. From the right, Maya, the mother of Shakyamuni, descends on a cloud led by the monk Aniruddha. In the lower portion of the painting animals express their grief in different ways, the large animals are arranged at the centre, while the smaller and smallest animals are depicted in the corners. Each year on the 15th day of the second month monumental nehan-zu are hung in temples open to the worshippers and accompanied by ceremonies in commemoration the death of the historical Buddha.The composition of the present painting follows the design laid down in the Kamakura period which follows the story of Buddha's death as told in the Nirvana Sutra and other scriptures. In the Edo period nehan-zu were created in great numbers and differing sizes - also as wood block prints - for temples and monastery of all Buddhist sects as well as for private households.155 x 118 cm Anonym. Auf einer Plattform mit Decke liegt Buddha Shakyamuni mit geschlossenen Augen, den Kopf auf den rechten Arm gestützt. Sie ist umgeben von acht sala-B?umen, darüber steht der Vollmond, von rechts schwebt auf einer Wolke die trauernde Maya, Mutter des Shakyamuni, angeführt von dem M?nch Aniruddha. Um das Sterbelager gruppieren sich eng trauernde, weinende und wehklagende Wesen, in unmittelbare N?he seine Schüler, gefolgt von Bodhisattva, die als erleuchtete Wesen ruhig und gelassen dreinblicken, Gottheiten, D?monen und Himmelsk?nige. Im unteren Bereich drücken Tiere und Fabelwesen in lockerer Anordnung auf eigene Weise ihren Schmerz aus, wobei auf die Stimmigkeit ihrer Gr??enverh?ltnisse geachtet wird, die kleinesten Tiere wie Würmer und Insekten befinden sich in den unteren Ecken. Monats werden diese monumentalen Bilder in buddhistischen Tempeln im Zusammenhang mit Zeremonien in Erinnerung an den weltlichen Tod des Buddha ?ffentlich gezeigt. Die vorliegende Darstellung folgt der Komposition, wie sie in der Kamakura-Zeit für nehan-zu festgelegt wurde, getreu den Beschreibungen vom weltlichen Ende des Buddha im Nirvana-Sutra und anderen Schriften.
