19th C Chinese Qing Dynasty porcelain vase, Having a squared baluster shaped body, with angled shoulder to the waisted prominent neck and flared square rim, raised on flat base. The exterior decorated in opaque famille rose hand painting, each side depicted a figurine from the "Table of the Peerless Heroes" (Wu Shuang Pu); showing lettering inscription of their title and names. The neck with compromising short story of the correspondence heroes enclosed within shaped cartouche. The vase glaze stopping above the foot rim, revealed the pale-creme unglazed foot rim with grayish-dark spots in firing.
Mark on the receded white overglazed central base, six red script -KaiShu- characters, XianFeng Reign Period of Great Qing, and prob. of the period (1851-1862).

LOT NOTES: The figures are from a book of woodcut prints (Wu Shuang Pu) originally published in the late 17th century (33rd year of Kangxi reign, 1694, by a painter known as Jin Guliang. This book that has been reprinted at numerous occasions consist of wood block prints, is called Wu (No) Shuang (Peerless, parallel, rivaled) Pu (book, score) contains the painter's imagined portraits of 40 heroes and heroines from the Han to Song dynasties. In his forewords to the volume, Jin stated that these exemplary characters were no longer seen, therefore, no parallel, (wushuang).
