An early seal-top spoon, possibly Exeter circa 1640, the fig shaped bowl to a slightly tapering stem and knopped terminal with a flat top prick-dot initialled 'S.C' over 'M.W' and dated 1640. Single struck mark to inner bowl. Length 7.25 (18.5cm), weight 1.65 ozt (51.4 grams). Appears in fairly good overall condition given the age. With expected surface wear, marks, scratches and tarnishing. Some loss of definition to stem and finial. Traces of gilding to finial. Heavier wear around the tip of the bowl and metal appears slightly thinner. Bowl also with some slight surface bumps or bruises and heavier scratches, nicks and pitting marks. There is a more notable pitted area at the base of the bowl just above the join to stem and visible more to the reverse. Struck mark to inner bowl with significant rubbing and wear. Appears to resemble the town mark of origin for Exeter of a letter X in a round shield surmounted by a crown
