An early 17th century silver seal-top spoon, the fig shaped bowl with engraved crest verso depicting a dragon atop a coronet, with slightly tapering stem to a stepped, squat terminal. Hallmarked London, no visible date letter, maker's mark for Daniel Cary (1614-1634), bottom struck with the leopard head struck to the inner bowl. Length 7 (18cm), weight 1.82 ozt (56.5 grams). The spoon displays general expected scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use. Some surface nicks and pitting and heavier wear around edges of stem and bowl.Engraved crest rubbed and worn with some loss of detail. Slight flattening to the heel. In the bowl, just above the leopard head, there are some cracks and pitting visible in the metal. Evidence of some repairs or restoration, the first is to the bowl, just off centre there is an area that is a darker tone, also visible verso. Further repair likely to the centre of the stem. At the top of the stem just below the terminal there is a patch of denser scratches and slight discolouration. Hallmarks somewhat worn but in keeping with the age and use.Considering the age of the spoon, the overall condition appears to be fairly good. Some tarnishing and expected surface wear, marks and scratches consistent with the age. Also some surface nicks and pitting. The stem was possibly once faceted but this definition is now worn. The surface on the top of the terminal appears heavily pitted. There is some rubbing, loss of surface detail and partial distortion to some of the hallmarks but given the age they have faired well and are mostly clearly legible. The date letter displays the heaviest wear.Striking edges worn down. Slight flattening to the heel. Decoration to the terminal worn, slight remnants of a armorial to the main surface . Hallmarks somewhat worn but in keeping with the age an
