Ancient Chinese Jade Dragon Amulet, Liangzhu Culture (3500 BC--2100 BC)
Authentic and Extremely RARE!
Estimate 5,000 Years Old!
“A gentleman always carried a jade pendant, as a symbol of class and to remind him the virtues of a gentleman, since those virtues were found in jade.”
—Confucius
This ritual Dragon Amulet is a museum quality example of early Chinese art and culture from the Neolithic Period. Chinese experts date this amazing ritual pendant to the workmanship, carving style, and genre of the the Liangzhu Culture (3500 BC--2100 BC) in ancient China. A recent appraisal by one Chinese antiquites expert has determined that this jade Dragon Amulet was likely a ritual pendant that was sacrificed as a tribute to the ancestors and gods of ancient China and is about 5,000 Years Old!
This ritual Jade Amulet was meant to be worn as a pendant or amulet in ancient China.
It measures approximately 3.3" long x 1.75" wide x .88" thick and weighs approximately 104 grams or 3.7 oz.
As 2012 is the Year of the Dragon, this Amulet would make a special gift for yourself or for someone special!
Normally, jade objects from the 5,000 year-old Liangzhu Culture turn a deep, rich, chestnut brown color from the elements and minerals they absorb from the surrounding soil. But what makes this particular pendant especially rare is that it has turned cream-colored white after being subjected to the high heat of a fire and then buried in wet soil for 5,000 years.
Experts believe the ancient shaman would burn ritual objects during sacrificial prayers so the smoke would spiral up into the Heavens and carry their prayers to their ancestors and to the Heavenly Gods. I believe this pendant was subjected to high temperatures that turn it white. In addition, a careful examination under 10x shows it that much of the jade has been calcified by thousands of years of being buried in soil. The porous stone absorbed the salts and calcium in the water and then the salts leached out of the stone when it is again exposed to air. The iron and other minerals in the soil have caused iron spots in the jade--this is completely normal for an ancient piece and again proves its authentic providence.
It is likely that the sacrifice of this pendant was thought to drive away evil spirits and honor departed ancestors or perhaps cause an event to happen on earth--like rain. Two holes were drilled by hand through the pendant at each end so that it could be worn as a pendant by the shaman or high priest. These two hole are consistent with those drilled in identified museum pieces. Each hole (see photo 4) has been drilled by hand from both sides of the amulet. No modern tools used here.
This example is period correct and matches perfectly the examples on display at the Smithsonian's Freer & Sackler Gallery website and at other museums in London and Beijing. Sometimes, ancient amulets were sacrificed by the shaman to the Gods.
It is a wonderful piece and would look great displayed next to your other fine ancient Chinese jade and bronze pieces!
