Japan. 19th/early 20th c. Cypress wood (hinoki). Eyes inlaid of back-painted and gold-plated glass. The toad is depicted with his head slightly turned to the right. The inlaid eyes are alive and expressive due to the gold leaf behind the glass. The wood grain was cleverly used to depict the warty skin. The different hard and dark growth layers of the Japanese cypress wood were also clearly worked out by scorching and brushing. Length 42cm. Sign.: Yasutane t?. Condition A/B. Left hind toe chipped.
