Japan. Meiji period. Hiratsuka Mohei (born ca. 1836). Silver partly enameled, Gold lacquer with very finely carved and engraved inlays of multi-colored mother-of-pearl, coral, jade, horn, and colored bone. Rectangular, bulbous vessel with indrawn corners standing on four feet. On the front and back a gold lacquered cartouche with flower bouquets with flowering peonies, chrysanthemums, clovers (hagi), bellflowers and cherry blossoms. Two small curved leaves serve as side handles and the lid is crowned by a knob in the form of a half-opened blue peony flower. The vessel and lid are richly decorated with tendrils and flowers. Height 15cm, width 11.5cm, depth 9cm. In the bottom signed: Hiratsuka. Condition A/B. Few inlays missing.
