Japan. Kamakura period (1185-1333). Dated according C14 Analysis. Wood with lacquer and gilt. Base from numerous parts and with an openwork middle part of bronze. The Buddha sits in lotus posture with his hands in meditation gesture (j? in). With his eyes almost closed, his expression is introverted. The kesa garment is draped in elegant folds and leaves his chest free. The original base in the shape of a lotus blossom is separated from the base by an openwork middle section. The mudra is exactly called j?bon j?sh? and is within the nine steps the one for the rebirth in the highest level of the western paradise of Buddha Amida. Such a large figure was certainly placed in a temple. Complete height 72cm. Condition A/B. Partly restored. Provenance: -Collection Robert W.
