Thailand. Chakri dynasty (since 1782). 19th c. Pigments and gold on handwoven silk. Large standing Buddha with his hands in the gesture of conferring fearlessness (abhaya mudra). He is dressed in an orange-red kasaya garment and a drop-shaped mandorla extends behind his head. The lotus blossom beneath his feet lies on a stepped and richly decorated pedestal. The red background is printed with flowers and extends under a typical Thai temple roof. A pair of Apsara are visible in the clouds above, holding a lotus flower in a gesture of worship. Beneath the Buddha there are flowers, a pair of candles and incense sticks on an altar. At the bottom of the flower frame there is a cartouche for the names of the donors. This type of hangings are called pa bai in Thailand and were donated to temples. Their production creates merit (thamboon) for the soul of the donors, as well as the painter. 316x96cm. Condition B. Middle fold and rubbed. Provenance: -Collection Prof. Dr. Reinhold Lucius (1880-1966). Worked until 1914 in Thailand as an university professor. He donated a temple in the north of Bangkok and out of gratitude these long temple hangings were given by an abbot to him. -Private collection Baden-Württemberg by inheritance.
