Thailand. Chakri dynasty (seit 1782). 19th c. Pigment on handwoven silk. The hanging shows situations from the life of the Buddha, as they are spread especially in Thailand. The top scene shows the prince, who later became the Buddha, cutting off his long hair. Below, the prince on a white horse encounters a large green-skinned demon with a club. Further down is the palace of the Shakya family. In the garden the queen is standing at the birth of the prince, as told in the tradition. At the bottom the encounter of the prince with illness, old age and death is indicated. Hangings with Jataka served as instruction. In this size they were to be found surely only in the temple. 336x88cm. Condition B. Rubbed. Provenance: -Collection Prof. Dr. Reinhold Lucius (1880-1966). Worked until 1914 in Thailand as an university professor. He donated a temple in the north of Bangkok and out of gratitude these long temple hangings were given to him. -Private collection Baden-Württemberg by inheritance.
