拍品描述: Nine 19th Century Luohan Bronze Figurines:
Description:
This lot may have previously been part of the previous lot, making a set of 18. The came from the same consignor, who wanted them sold as two lots. Buddhist tradition tells of 16 or 18 Luohans commanded by Buddha to await the coming of the future Buddha, and how they acted as protectorates for the ninth century Chinese people. Groups of 16, 18 or 500 Luohans awaited the arrival of Maitreya, the Future Buddha. These and smaller groupings of six or eight were each given names and personalities in Buddhist tradition.
