Description:
A set of nine seated Luohan figures, cold painted in red, gold and black. Buddhist tradition tells of 16 or 18 Luohans commanded by Buddha to await the coming of the future Buddha, and how they acted as protectorates for the ninth century Chinese people. Groups of 16, 18 or 500 Luohans awaited the arrival of Maitreya, the future Buddha. These and smaller groupings of six or eight were each given names and personalities in Buddhist tradition.
