White jade. China, late Qing Dynasty
Tortoise and snake are symbols of the "Northern Warriors", a deity. As the tortoise is a longevity symbol and the snake is member of the zodiac, it is plausible that this jade was worn by someone born in the Year of the Snake as a long-life talisman. It could have been used as hand-charmer (worry stone) or "toggle" (belt toggle). The tortoise is hollow throughout and open on both ends. Very good condition.
