Netsuke, wood and coral. Japan, 19th cent.
Masterful, successful depiction of a fast, racing lion dog; one back leg is stretched out while the front legs are pulled in ready to land. Actually, the shishi balances on its fore paws with its backside and tail in the air. Peerless, expressive head, all-in-all finely crafted with inlaid eyes and holding a red ball (presum. coral) in the open mouth. Fine polish and color of boxwood.
