Paintings from Bali, Indonesia
Indonesian painting has an ancient tradition going back to the empire of Mcjapahit – to about late 13th century with Bali. There, Kamasan was the center beginning with the 16th cent. Then, somewhat later, Ubud and Batuan joined – two neighboring provinces. The painting is demotic and full of fantasy, life force and joy in the pleasures that diverse festivities offer. But also very fascinating through the belief in the omnipotence of demons in the jungle, which is reflected in the exciting, expressive composition of corresponding figures and masks in their colorful savagery. Also in Sanur an artists′group formed – less concerned with religious themes as with wild (oceanic) animals, erotic and dance scenes in emphasized, rhythmic rendition. After the war, a Dutch soldier named Arie Smit, who decided to stay in Bali, founded an artists′group in Penestanan. In 1970, around 300 “provincial painters“ were reportedly active. All offered paintings here were acquired by a German family, who resided in Indonesia in the 1970′s.
