拍品描述
Far East, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A charming depiction of an ancient Chinese pan flute player with partial brown glaze over natural terracotta made during the Han Dynasty. Forms of the pan flute, this most enduring and oldest musical instrument, have been found as early as 6000 years ago, and references to the pan flute exist in Greek mythology as well as 5th millennium BCE Peruvian visual culture. Today, the pan flute is most associated with Peruvian cultures and representations are also oftentimes found in Papua New Guinean forms. This example from the Han Dynasty is certainly quite figural; however, the sculptor's penchant for abstraction of the figure is quite evident and pleasing. A wonderful depiction of a wind musician in ancient China. Size: 4.75" H (12.1 cm).

Provenance: Ex-private British collection; ex-Ancient Art International, FL.
