18th C. Burmese Lacquered Wood Temple

拍品描述
Southeast Asia, Burma, ca. 1860 CE. This is a large house temple made of wood and decorated with tendrils and leaves made of clay and fortified by iron wire. The wood is lacquered and gilded, with inset mirrors and delicate decorations. The leaves and tendrils are also painted. There is a covered relic chamber in the base of the temple. The level of complexity on this piece is truly astounding. If you appreciate ornate craftsmanship, you will appreciate this piece. Size: 30-1/2"H x 17"W x 10"L (77-1/2 cm x 43 cm x 25-1/2 cm).

Provenance: Ex-private Northern Colorado collection, ex-private Taos, NM, collection; brought out of Burma in 1964 by Peace Corp volunteer.

The complexity of this piece makes it fragile, so a few of the tendrils have broken off; however, it is almost entirely intact. The paint is slightly faded but still clear. The relic chamber inside the bottom has some slight damage due to rodents, but
